Inception Camera Angles Homework

Zero gravity fight scene (link)

Long shot - Although not a traditional establishing shot, it establishes to the viewers the situation at hand. Featuring Arthur, the solitary standing figure, in the centre of the shot further shows how alone he is, as he isn't immediately surrounded by something or someone that is in a similar position/state to him. The fact that this is the opposite to the situation at hand can be taken as encouraging confusion, connoting the confusion of the fight sequence to come in addition to showing the complex and unnatural dream state they're all in.

Medium shot - low angle - forward tracking shot - Shows the enemy as large and intimidating by following them to keep them large in the camera by tracking, a medium shot to make them appear big while showing the weapon and threatening armour that denotes violence, and a low angle to make them look superior to the audience and the protagonists. This denotes to the audience that the 'bad guys' are bigger and so tougher than the protagonists, and so more dangerous and likely to defeat the protagonists. the movement featured in the tracking shot, along with the fast and frequent cuts, makes the fight scene feel fast and tense.

Close up - Shows the potential damage of the shot, and the character's emotions and reaction to the event. Makes the character more personable, and so encourages support for them.

Medium shot - Of Arthur, detailing the preparation he is taking to prepare for the fight to come. Showing his face makes him more relatable. while showing preparation connotes a difficult situation to come.

Medium shot - high angle - Shows the equipment used in Inception. The high angled shot connotes value, as a person is looking over it in a caring or cautious manner, which the acting in the scene supports.

Medium shot - forward tracking shot - Again shows Arthur's face, which the medium shot allows, to emote to the audience the worry on his face, which combined with the fast track connotes upcoming action. Goes into a tracking shot of him to follow him into the action, like the audience is with him physically, in addition to just supporting him.

Reverse shot - medium close up - backward tracking shot - Shows the emotions again of Arthur, making the man just appearing look more menacing and builds tension to the upcoming fighting scene, which is connoted by the appearance.

Medium shot - forward tracking shot - Returns to the previous shot, making it a shot-reverse shot, again connoting the upcoming fight by showing the man chasing Arthur. Following Arthur connotes to the audience who to root for - Arthur.

Low angle shot - backwards tracking shot - long shot - shows the van being attacked to establish the amount of danger the whole group is in. Also shows the van as large possibly foreshadowing that the protagonists will win this confrontation.

Close up - Shows the driver being attacked, relating more to the character as the audience can see the pain he's going through to complete the mission.

Low angle shot - forward tracking shot - two shot - shows the protagonists and the enemy on either side of a road, showing more the enemy attacking the protagonists. However, as they are now both equally big due to the low angle shot, it connotes that the protagonists and antagonists are now on equal footing, the situation isn't as dire as it was.

Medium close up - shallow depth of field - Even though the main focus is the driver, having equal focus on the antagonists/ enemies connotes that there is still a present threat, while a medium close up shows the pain and desperation of the driver. Connotes that even though the protagonists are gaining on the antagonists, there is still a present threat.

Low angle shot - forward tracking shot - returns to the previous shot, showing the enemy getting defeated by the driver protagonist. As this was a two shot, it denotes that there is now less enemy, which connotes less threat and that the protagonists are close to defeating the antagonists. In addition, the low angle shot now primarily featuring the van shows that now the protagonists are big and intimidating, connoting that they are more of a threat.

Inception

Marketing

Pre release

  • Trailer
  • Game (with poster)
  • Cast and Crew
  • Merchandise
  • Social media (throughout)
  • Participation (Clue solving through apps, magazines and the internet)
  • Game improvement (second trailer)
  • Comic

The film intentionally had little information released about it, with only a trailer released in August 2009. After this, the Inception website only had an animation of the spinning top in the film, which continued, acting like a countdown until December. At this point, the game Mind Crime was released on the website, which upon completion created the poster for the film. This made the fans feel involved with the film, which was important as it was an original concept with no original fan base. To also remedy this, the marketing also focused on using the cast and crew (especially Christopher Nolan) as adverts themselves, relying on their fan base to watch the film.
In December, free T-shirts were released featuring images of props from the film, and on these contained codes linking to the guide to the device used in the film, based on the website. Mind Crime also got a hidden trailer for the film upon completion, all of this making the fans feel intrigued and connected to the film. A prequel comic was also released to act as a film prequel surrogate.
Social media profiles were set up to allow the download of promotional pictures etc.
Managed to gain interest in the film without revealing plot, making it more intriguing and so more people went to see it at the cinema, which is where the director waned it to be seen.
